Ok I just thought I would dedicate some blog space to both the good and bad sides of graffiti that we see around us everyday in the urban landscape.
Some of it is awe inspiring and I would be the first to appreciate it and it is this type of art that can bring life and colour to an area that would be bland and boring otherwise.
Other graffiti is however just visual pollution and vandalism in its simplest form. Tagging being the main offender. And in some areas it has just ruined the feel and nature of a community that could do without it. I wonder if it effects house prices as much as I think it could?? If anyone has opinions on that too I would love to hear them! Here are a bunch of examples I took this week while out walking on a random route into town from my own home in a Cork City Suburb.
See what you guys think! I will keep posting pics I see around as a progression of this.
The strange thing is that none of these places that have been tagged are in derelict or lower class areas really…its all quiet, residential or major pedestrian and traffic routes into the city with a mix of historical and newer developments along these routes so it is a surprise that so much graffiti has popped up in the last 2 years here and very little of it has been cleaned away seemingly. Most of the residential ‘tagging’ rather than the artistic ones tho have been scribbled down on objects within a radius of about 1.5km from an area which is known for containing a slightly more undesirable element as of lately. I just hope most of it gets cleaned! Even if I have to do it! Or that they get more creative with it all in general…I do like art in its many forms after all. Who doesn’t??!
